Fieldline Bag found frozen (still intact) containing all original valuables after 12 long years

In June 1990, Chuck Gohs of Twin Lakes, Wisconsin went canoeing along the Popple River with friends. After a fantastic morning of quick rapids and beautiful scenery, his adventure quickly took a turn for the worse. With an injured friend left behind at waters edge to cool a swollen knee, Chuck and another buddy portaged to Little Bull Falls. Chuck swamped. He lost everything in his canoe and came close to drowning. He even lost his glasses, which were attached to a Croakie.

Of the items Chuck lost was a Fieldline Thwart Bag, which contained all his belongings for the trip, money, blankets, ID, credit cards, etc. After feverously searching for the bag downstream, he was unable to locate it. Intent to find his belongings, he filed paperwork at the National Forest Station with local and state police and placed a "lost & found" ad in two issues of The Florence Mining News. He received no response and finally gave up on finding his personal items.

Around Thanksgiving 2002, Chuck received a phone call from Craig Schultz who had found his bag frozen 1.5 miles down the Popple River, while deer hunting. One week later, UPS delivered a package. In the box were Chuck's original Fieldline Thwart bag and most of its contents. After twelve years of roaring rapids and harsh seasons, the bag and its contents were well preserved, except for a little rust and river slime.

Chuck expressed his gratitude by sending Craig a Christmas card containing images of the trip and travel log, in addition to half of the money left in his bag - approximately $75.
